Plans for a U.S. defense program aimed at fending off missile attacks from hostile nations were in a state of uncertainty following a failed test that heightened debate over whether the proposed shield is feasible or diplomatically sound. The crucial test collapsed in failure because the high-speed interceptor that was supposed to destroy a dummy warhead in space never seprated from its booster rocket, the Pentagon said.
