Thai monks turn environmental crusaders

While Buddhist ascetics traditionally sought the peace of Thailand's hardwood forests in which to meditate, some monks are now working to save the threatened trees. Over the past five years, as studies have revealed the extent of deforestation in Thailand, at least 100 monks living in rural areas have abandoned their reticence to become involved in politics and have tried to preserve the remaining forests, Buddhist scholars told AFP.
