In a move aimed at giving great relief to the residents of Thane and Navi Mumbai circles including Bhandup, Mulund, Kanjurmarg besides Kalva from power cuts, the Bhandup zone of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDC) has mooted zero load shedding for the city and its suburb. Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on Friday gave green signal to the same. However, they will have to pay additional surcharge for enjoying the uninterrupted power supply, around 43 paise/kwh for Thane circle and 35 paise/kwh for Vashi circle, to be levied on all consumers except residential consumers consuming 100 units per month. In view of the urgency, considering the fact that the scheme has to be operational from June 1, 08 and additional power procurement has to commence from the same the same date in order to reduce load shedding in these areas, the MERC has put into motion the revised reliability charges as computed by MSEDCL appears to be reasonable. The MERC has permited MSEDCL to undertake the additional power procurement from June 1, as proposed in the revised petition for 12 hrs of the day and levy charges as proposed in the revised petition to recover the expenditure on additional power purchase for ensuring zero load shedding in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Thane Urban Circle (Bhandup, Thane, Mulund, Wagle Estate, Kalwa), a press release from the MSEDCL said. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. submitted a petition under affidavit, on a comission on april 22nd 08, which has thereafter been submitted in revised form on May 29th 08 seeking approval to procure additional power for mitigating load shedding in Vashi, Mulund, Wagle Estate, Kalwa for the period May 08 to June 08 and October 08 to June 09.
