Ahmedabad: So you don't feel a threat from the needles which are causing a hepatitis epidemic? Listen, that 'trusted' ISI mark on your 20-litre jar of so-called "ozonised mineral drinking water" could be fake!
This warning comes from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) who have nabbed racketeers who recycle jars with ISI-markings but filled with contaminated water across Gujarat. Since you have already gulped down from that jar, here is what has entered your body. It's a deadly concoction of e-coli, coliform, vibrio cholorae, sulphide reducing bacteria and 10 other contaminants. If this sounds Greek, the first two microbes come from faecal matter and cause severe dysentery, while others cause cholera, typhoid and jaundice.
BIS raiding teams have found jars being packed in dingy rooms, at times in plots situated in stinking buffalo sheds. ISI labels of licensed bottling plants were taken out from authentic jars and stuck on identical jars filled with contaminated water.
These are supplied daily to thousands of customers across western Ahmedabad. And if you try and blame the 30 licence holders, they pretend ignorance about what happens down the line. According to BIS, more than 10,000 jars are supplied to households and restaurants in the city every day
