The environment becomes cool

The music industry is strengthening its environmental credentials, with the announcement that the Isle of Wight music festival in June will be carbon neutral. The pop industry appears to be becoming increasingly environmentally aware. In 1997, seven million CDs were carbon neutral through the planting of native trees, says carbon offset firm Future Forests. By the end of last year the figure had reached 30 million, and carbon neutral activities now include the introduction of new renewable energy facilities to replace those that emit carbon dioxide. Now, this year's Isle of Wight Festival, taking place on 14 and 15 July, will be offsetting 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the festival's 15,000 visitors through a reforestation project in Mozambique.
