General Chea Tara is on a mission to save Cambodia's trees. As 30 of his commandos parachute out of helicopters over an illegal logging site in Stung Treng province, he declares his goal is close. But his men find the loggers long departed. Helped by local villagers, they set about tearing down the logger's camp and burning their sawmill. Cambodia's prime minister, Hun Sen, ordered the crackdown in anticipation of demands of foreign donors, who have now indeed made forestry reform a condition of their offer of $470m of aid.
