The car epitomises the century's progress, as well as today's dilemmas. As machines go, the car is not terribly noisy, nor terribly polluting, nor terribly dangerous. People will now have to change the way the car rolls on, to try to moderate the three different sorts of difficulty that it poses: pollution, congestion and development.
