The rain forest doesn't need saving

Recently, the Times of London carried a map purportedly displaying the world distribution of rain forest. Even on the kindest interpretations, it was utter nonsense. The map, in short encompassed all jungly things. Moreover, the recent loss of trees is itself grossly exaggerated. New research in Brazil suggests that around 87.5% of the previously mapped area of the Amazon remains largely intact and, of the 12.5% that has been deforested, one-third to one-half is fallow or in the process of regeneration.
