The formation of a National Bamboo Technology Mission by the Government should not come as a surprise to those interested in bamboo and its products. The establishment of the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and the indication of IDRC - and UNDP - funded projects for the development of value-added products from bamboo in the 1990s underline the importance of its non-timber forest product for India.
