Latest reports by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) show that pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables on Indian plates have come down sharply in the past five years. Today, only three out of every 10 fruits, for instance, have any pesticide residues at all. And, more reassuringly, less than half a slice among these three would have more chemicals on it than what could be considered dangerous. Though the Centre prefers to keep this good news under wraps, it should come as a relief to consumers worried about the price they may pay in terms of health when they eat chemical-laced fresh produce.
