Thick fog, fresh snow in North India as cold wave intensifies

The cold wave maintained its grip over North India on Sunday, with temperatures settling below normal in most parts as fog enveloped the region, disrupting air, rail and road traffic. Dense fog enveloped the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the Capital, disrupting the schedule of over 50 domestic and international flights and causing inconvenience to passengers. Snowfall in Kashmir Meanwhile in the Kashmir Valley, there was a fresh bout of snowfall, with the maximum temperature in Srinagar dipping to 2 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, over two degrees down from the previous night’s minus 1.6 degrees, a Meteorological Department official said. “Light snowfall was recorded at many places in the Kashmir Valley, including in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Kokernag, Kulgam and Kupwara,” the weatherman said. He said the ski resort of Gulmarg received around 2 inches of snowfall, while Srinagar recorded 0.5 cm of snow. The official said the weather in the Valley would be cloudy on Monday but it is expected to be dry. Unabated cold in plains The intense cold wave continued unabated in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, with the mercury plummeting up to three degrees below normal, adversely affecting normal life. The minimum temperatures hovered between 1 to 3 degrees Celsius below normal in the plains of Punjab and Haryana, the Met office said. Several parts of Punjab and Haryana, including Hisar, Amritsar, Patiala, Bathinda, Narnaul, Ludhiana and Rohtak, remained engulfed under a thick blanket of fog. Several trains in the region ran hours behind schedule due to low visibility. The dense fog, accompanied by the biting cold, disrupted normal life in Rajasthan and eight trains of the North-Western Railways ran late by 50 minutes to about four hours in different parts of the State, a Railways official said. Fog also caused traffic jams on the Delhi-Jaipur, Kota-Jaipur and Jodhpur-Ajmer highways on Sunday morning. Icy winds in H.P. The piercing cold wave conditions continued unabated in Himachal Pradesh as tribal areas and higher hills had a fresh spell of snowfall, while the mid and lower hills received moderate rain. The sky remained heavily overcast and icy winds swept the region, forcing people to stay indoors. Manali and Shimla recorded 11 mm and 3 mm of rainfall, while Dalhousie, Una and Dharamsala had 5 mm, 4 mm and 3 mm. Una was the warmest in the State, with a maximum of 21.2 degrees, while Sundernagar, Solan and Bhuntar recorded a high of 18.7, 17.7 and 16, followed by Nahan at 15.6, Dharamsala at 15.2, Shimla at 13.1 and Kalpa at 3.
