In response to the crisis of water and subsequent threat of water privatisation, the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology along with two NGOs, Navdanya and Diverse Women For Diversity, organised a Paani Panchayat - a national water parliament. Leading environmental activists, Dr. Vandana Shiva, Anna Hazare and Rajinder Singh were present. In recent years, the demand for water has increased reasonably with population explosion, urbanisation and pursuit of higher standards of living. Hydrological experts say that there are no more fresh water resources to be found in the country.
