Thousands of fish found dead along seashore SHAFI BALOCH KARACHI -Thousands of fish of various kinds were found dead on Karachi seashore on Sunday. The local fishermen faced huge finical losses as people started taking the fish from the sea, which had already been declared unhygienic, The Nation learnt on Sunday. According to the details, dead fish have been found in large number at various points of the metropolitan including, Kiamari Channel, Baba Bit, Karachi Fish Harbor, Korangi Creak and Girzi. None of the concerned authority has taken any action so far. The different kinds of fish, which were found dead, include Swa fish that is one of the most valuable fish while others, Thothar, Dhori, Sehri, Mori, Chori, Phar, Maskan and others. The people started taking the unhygienic and dead fish from the shore. They are supposed to be sold the fish in various markets of the city. While the people are advised by the experts to avoid selling and eating such fish because it can cause health problems for the people. Commenting on the reason for the death of the fish in a large number in the city, The Chairman of Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum (PFF), Mohammad Ali Shah told The Nation that the marine pollution is the cause of such incident. He also mentioned that earlier various such incidents took place and the fish in a large number were found dead. Shah said that they pointed out such environmental and marine pollution issues to the high ups of the concerned departments but so far none of them had taken any action in this regard and the local and poor fishermen have been suffering with this problem. He termed the privet factories responsible and said that, such factories use to release poison chemicals and other wastes sources of creating marine pollution, while the fish those have been caught from the coastal area of Karachi. He added that mostly the factories those have been operating near Lyari River, Korangi, and other close areas of the seashore. Such effluent and chemical is being released into the small and big rivers and pounds those lead the coastal areas. There was not any arrangement to dump such unhygienic chemical and other wastes in other separate place. Meanwhile, despite of passing several hours of dying the fish in a large number, no government official visited the spot and no action was taken till filling of the news. The concerned government department including, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Marine Time Security Agency (MSA), Marine Fishing Department (MFD) and Karachi Port Trust (KPT) are sitting silent. Mohammad Ali Shah further claimed that they had contacted the concerned government officials several times about the environment and marine pollution issues but they did nothing except lip service to control the problem. He maintained that the government management should take out the fish from the sea and dump them outside the city. He expressed his concerns that if the authorities did not take steps, the mafias could take the unhygienic dead fish and sell in markets of the city. This could cause various diseases among the people.
