Three killed as rain lashes northern region

Rainfall activity picked up in parts of North India on Thursday, including the Capital, even as three persons died in the region in various rain-related mishaps. The weatherman has predicted light to moderate showers over the next 24 hours at several places in the region. Though rain brought down the temperature at many places, surging humidity made life difficult at most places. Meanwhile, in the eastern region, the flood situation in Assam has worsened with three more districts coming into its grip as the swollen Brahmaputra and its tributaries have affected about four lakh people, official sources said. High humidity The maximum temperature in major parts of Punjab and Haryana remained below normal though high humidity aggravated the woes of people in the region. Chandigarh had a high of 32.2 degrees Celsius, 2 notches below normal. In Haryana, Hisar recorded a maximum of 33.4 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal. Bhiwani and Narnaul settled at 37.4 degrees Celsius and 34.5 degrees Celsius respectively. However, the mercury rose in Rohtak by a degree above normal and settled at 35.2 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded maximum temperature of 33.4 degrees Celsius, down by 2 notches and 32.8 degrees Celsius, also lower by one degree below normal, respectively. With rain remaining elusive, humidity level stood between 80 and 90 per cent in the region. Landslides Incessant rain in Uttarakhand triggered landslides killing two persons and injuring five while in Himachal Pradesh one person was killed and seven others are feared to have been washed away in a cloudburst in Kullu district, officials said. Dholpur in Rajasthan recorded 11 cm rainfall followed by Bari where 6 cm rain was measured, according to the weatherman. - PTI
