Three states account for almost 50 per cent of the country's slum population. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have 19.95 million people living in slums, which is 49.14 per cent of the 40.6 million slum dwellers in the country. Maharashtra tops the list of states with a record slum population of 10.6 million, about 25 per cent of the total 40.6 million people living in slums spread across 607 towns in 26 states and Union Territories.
