BHUBANESWAR: Drinking water to the flood affected areas will be supplied through tankers or in pouches till normal supply was restored, said Rural Development Minister Biwasbhusan Harichandan Saturday. He told newsmen that over 19,000 out of 23,646 tube-wells in 3,405 flood-affected villages of 111 blocks have been disinfected and measures have been taken to repair 252 pipe water supply projects. The department has pressed 70 water tankers and 252 mobile vans into service. Safe drinking water is being supplied through Sintex tanks and in places where movement of tankers and vans is not possible, water pouches are being delivered. Permanent restoration of drinking water supply will cost about Rs 4 crore, while Rs 3 crore will be required for immediate restoration. All the functionaries of the Rural Works and Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) have been asked to remain vigilant and pro-actively respond to the drinking water requirement of the people, he said. The Rural Development and the Panchayati Raj departments have been allocated Rs 51 crore each for immediate restoration of rural roads. The damaged roads will be restored temporarily in 45 days. The Panchayati Raj Department has instructed gram panchayats and panchayat samitis to take up restoration works in their respective areas of jurisdiction, while the Rural Development Department has also taken up restoration works. Over 950 RD roads stretching over 2,900 km have been damaged and breaches occurred at 492 places. The restoration of road to normal condition will coast Rs 360 crore. Temporary restoration will cost Rs 51 crore, while for permanent restoration, it would be another Rs 309 crore. The Minister said permanent restoration will be taken up from special central assistance. The department will go for supplementary budget if the promised Central assistance is not provided. The Centre has announced special flood package of Rs 500 crore for the State.
