A 10-year-old tiger mauled its mother to death at the Bannerghatta Biological Park on Sunday. The incident occurred inside a cage at the Tiger Safari Area around 2.30 pm, when the park, situated 22 km south of Bengaluru, was bustling with weekend visitors.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that the tigers, Meghana and Brandis, started fighting in the Y.M.L. Sharma Cage in which they were housed.
Forest staff tried to separate the tigers but the big cats clawed and mauled each other for about 15 minutes.
Brandis then delivered the fatal blow, biting Maghana in the throat.
Brandis was finally forced inside an adjacent cage but it was too late by then. Meghana was already dead.
BNP veterinary officer B. Basavarajappa said Meghana could not have survived the savage bite to the neck.
