At a time when the Central government is pushing through various initiatives to conserve tigers in the country, the rising incidents of seizure of tiger parts in Assam have raised fears that like the rhino, poaching of tigers too is going on in the State in significant number. According to National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), two incidents of tiger parts seizure were reported in Assam in 2016. In 2017, out of eight cases of tiger parts seizure already reported across the country, four are from Assam. As per the NTCA report, on June 14 last year, tiger parts were seized at Dhemaji while on November 1, tiger parts were recovered at Manas National Park. This year, tiger parts including skin, bones and skulls, were seized at Sixth Addition of Kaziranga National Park on February 4, at North Lakhimpur on March 25, at Biswanath Chariali on April 9 and Kogalipothar in Behali on April 14. Another report says that most of the tiger parts seized in India are used in traditional medicines, decorations and even good luck charms in China, Nepal and Thailand. On the other hand, three tigers have perished in the State so far. One tiger died on February 12 at Nameri Tiger Reserve while another tiger perished at Orang Tiger Reserve on March 24. The world heritage site Kaziranga National Park also lost a tiger this year on April 15. The report says that all the three tigers died due to natural causes. In 2016, five tigers perished in the State. According to tiger census 2014, there was a total of 2,226 tigers in the country of which 167 tigers were in Assam.
