BHUBANESWAR: Its wildlife habitats facing growing pressure, the State Government plans to go in for GIS mapping of the protected areas along with a strengthened anti-poaching setup and identification of the boundaries. The plan covers all the wildlife sanctuaries but Similipal and Satkosia will receive special attention being the two identified Project Tiger areas in the State. The Forest Department has estimated its funds requirement at Rs 72 crore for the current year itself. The estimation includes need for wildlife management as well as implementation of perspective plans of 13 sanctuaries and those of Similipal, Satkosia, Bhitarkanika, Chandaka and Nandankanan. For Similipal, the Forest Department has targetted boundary line over 700 km periphery while it wants an augmentation in the anti-poaching squads in the tiger habitat. Over the next five years, the plan is to create 225 such units while move is on to put in place intelligence gathering squads too. For last one year, Similipal has remained shut due to Maoist threat and the Department has reasons to believe that the Red rebels have been supported by locals some of whom may have been part of the existing protection setup. The Department has also been mulling more access to the interior areas since the inadequate road connectivity has been a major handicap for the security forces. The perspective plan for the tiger reserve too aims at maintenance of roads of 3,000 km length over the next five years. Satkosia, the second tiger reserve in the State, too will have a similar strategy where the State plans a similar kind of anti-poaching and intelligence setup in the future. As per the plan of action, Similipal will need close to Rs 29 crore in the first five years. The Government hopes to get a lion
