Tighter dioxin rules planned

Acknowledging that dioxin pollution is not being dealt with adequately, the government of Japan will introduce more stringent standards and overhaul its pollution monitoring efforts, officials said today. The decision was announced at the Cabinet's first dioxin countermeasures meeting, held this morning. The meeting was particularly concerned over unifying the approach to monitoring and enforcement among the government's various ministries and agencies: currently they apply differing approaches and standards in dealing with the toxic chemical.
