A Royal Bengal tigress was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Chhatbir Zoological Park on Sunday evening. Zoo sources said fighting with another inmate in the enclosure cost Shanti her life. The role of the management has come under the scanner as it had reportedly deployed a few beldaars (daily-wagers) on duty at the tiger enclosure in place of regular zoo keepers. The seven-year-old reportedly had a severe fight with another tiger around 3 pm. According to the sources, the two big cats got irritated while they were being captivated in their respective dens by a beldaar. The unskilled worker was performing the job of a trained zoo keeper, due to which he could not control them, said a source. Shanti was a healthy tigress and had delivered four cubs twice. The carcass of the Schedule I animal will undergo an autopsy on Monday. Not even a single official of the zoo, besides veterinary doctors, allegedly turned up at the spot. While Chief Wildlife Warden M P Rai said the matter had not been reported to him by any zoo official, field director Dharmendra Sharma could not be contacted for comments as his cell phone remained switched off.
