Western environmentalists warn that northernmost Burma's remaining forest will all be gone within a few years if current rates of clear-cutting continue. Unchecked logging could have severe long-term effects as the watersheds of two of Burma's most important river systems-the Irrawaddy and the Chindwin-are located in the far north.
