Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Thursday ordered closure of 10 Individual Effluent Treatment Plants (IETPs) in Tirupur for its failure to comply with the directives of Supreme Court pertaining to the pollution caused by dyeing units on River Noyyal.
This was ordered following surprise checks at the plants at Nallur, Iduvampalayam, Angeripalayam and Arulpuram areas.
TNPCB District Environmental Engineer R. Kannan told The Hindu that the said units were not ensuring zero liquid discharge in the dyeing process and they were also discharging the effluents indiscriminately.
The power connection to these units were disconnected under Section 33 A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
The Board had also constituted a three-member flying squad to ascertain whether the dyeing units were following the court directive.
The Board's Executive Engineer (monitoring) P. Asokan (Tel: 80560-42288), Assistant Executive Engineers P. Kamaraj (Tel:80560-42208) and A Shanmugam (Tel: 80560-42244) were the members of the squad.
The public who happened to witness any dyeing unit discharging effluents into water bodies were requested to inform the squad members for swift corrective action.
The closure of the IETPs and constitution of flying squads came close on the heels of a writ petition filed by Noyyal River Ayacutdars Protection Association in the Madras High Court after it was found in a government study that Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels in the river was constantly rising despite the Supreme Court ban on discharge of dyeing effluents came into force on January 6 this year.
