With an aim to guide the youth and community leaders against the harmful effect of tobacco, the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension (CACEE), Panjab University, observed "No Tobacco Day', on Tuesday. Around 40 community leaders attended the programme. Programme in-charge Renu Gandhi said that to ensure good health, one must cultivate the habit of abstaining from tobacco. She expressed deep concern about the figures released by World Health Organisation, which stated that a hundred million people died in the 20th century because of tobacco. If such trends continue, there will be up to a billion deaths in the 21st century, the study stated. As the use of tobacco has gained tremendous popularity among adolescents these days, there is a need to educate the parents to check their wards and inform them about the harmful effects of tobacco. An awareness campaign would help discourage the use of tobacco in the youth, the effect of which has clearly been observed in the West. Vinod Chadha, President, National Association for the Blind, said common people should be told about the impact of tobacco to encourage them to check on its health hazards.
