Ahmedabad: In its continuing drive against hospitals not following waste disposal norms, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) served notice to VHP international general secretary Praveen Togadia's Dhanvantri hospital in Bapunagar among others on Friday for improper waste segregation and not possessing the mandatory no-objecion certificate (NOC).
Officers also issued notices to San-jeevani Heart Hospital and Gunjan Maternity Hospital in Nava Vadaj, Yash Sur-gicals in Bapunagar, Adarsh Pathological Lab and Satyam Hospital on similar grounds. They have been asked to respond to the notice, served under the Environment Protection Act (EPA), in seven days.
Sources said most hospitals were under the impression that they did not require the GPCB NOC if they received 1,000 and less patients. However, officers clarified that any medical premises with one or more beds was required to procure GPCB's permission for disposing biomedical waste in the city that used discarded medicine bottles. The bottles were found in units like Nagarjuna Pharma in Naroda and Petson Lab in Khoda, Sanand.
However, senior officers in GPCB Gandhinagar claim action taken against defaulters on the issue of recycling medicine bottles can be contested if the food and drugs department does not fall in line. "It's a matter of quality which comes under the purview of the food and drugs department. These defaulters can question GPCB's authority to raid them," says a senior GPCB official. Officials also fear that as word spreads, many defaulting units would clear their godowns of evidence if a coordinated effort is not launched soon. Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) too has been conducting it's own raids based on the list provided by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
"We have started inspecting premises across the state. Details are being collated. Each of our inspections are being analysed on different parameters," says FDCA commissioner HG Koshia.
