Hyderabad, July 14: The tourism department, which enjoyed a high degree of importance in the Telugu Desam regime, is now struggling to pay for an an international tourism event in the state. The Pacific Asian Travel Association travel mart is scheduled to held between September 16-19 at Hyderabad. The tourism department has managed to rope in more than 2,000 delegates from nearly 120 countries but has run out of money. The department asked the government for Rs 17 crore to organise the event. But the finance department sanctioned only Rs 6 crore and made it clear that the tourism wing has to raise the rest of the money. "We have booked the HICC convention centre and 1,220 hotel rooms in 12 hotels," an official said. "We are acquiring 20 hi-tech air-conditioned coaches and 30 mid-size vans. Chauffeur driven cars and 1,000 call taxis will be kept ready for this event. Now we have to look for alternative finance arrangements," he said. The tourism principal secretar, Ms Laxmi Pardhasaradhi, has mo-ved the Centre. "After all the Centre bid for this event. They have to bear the burden." she said. Security is another aspect troubling the organisers. The chief secretary, Mr P. Rama-kanth Reddy, assured a PATA delegation that the government would give top priority for the event.
