Tourism dept clears 50 encroachments off beaches

As directed by the High Court, the Tourism Department Thursday carried out an exercise to free the Candolim-Baga beach belt of unauthorised beach beds, umbrellas and other encroachments. It may be recalled that the High Court after taking suo-moto cognizance of a photo that appeared in Herald showing a crowded beach area on the famous tourist belt had directed the Department to conduct the drive. Today, the department conducted the exercise in which it cleared 50 encroachments that included, besides unauthorized umbrellas and beds, small obstructions like sign boards and other small structures.
