Urban India spends much more on non-food items than on food items while the reverse trend holds true for rural India. While the urban-rural divide in spending pattern is wider in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, it is the narrowest in Kerala and Maharashtra. Urban households spend 88% more than their rural counterparts every month. As per the survey on the household consumer expenditure in India conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), during January-June 2004, the all-India average monthly per capita expenditure was Rs 565 for rural India and Rs 1,060 for urban India.
