Toxic metals found in local salt

Consumers may want to think twice before reaching for the salt-shaker, following an alarming Cost Rican government report released this week showing that salt produced in Costa Rica contains dangerous concentrations of lead and cadmium. These toxic metals can have serious effects on the human body if not kept below certain levels. The National Standards Office tested 10 brands commonly sold in Costa Rica, and found all exceeded lead and cadmium safety limits by a wide margin.
