Environmentalists have gone into combat mode over the government's move to widen Southern Avenue - one of Calcutta's few real boulevards - by narrowing the tree line that divides the road and covers it with a green canopy. Transport minister Subhash Chakraborty said that large portions would be peeled away from the traffic islands to further widen the boulevard.
