Mandakini Gahlot New Delhi, July 27 The number of vehicles on the Capital's roads has been growing at a fast pace. And now this growth is expected to speed up further. Newsline looks at some figures * The two decades between 1981 and 2001 have seen a phenomenal increase in the growth of vehicles and traffic in Delhi. The number of motor vehicles has increased from 5.13 lakh in 1981 to 32.38 lakh in 2001. The number of buses in the same period has increased from 8,600 to 41,483 * Based on the rate of increase in the number of trips between 1981 and 2001, it is estimated that total trips will rise to 280 lakh by 2021, which includes 257 lakh motorised trips and 23 lakh non-motorised trips. * As of March 2007, there were 33,08,610 two-wheelers, 15,34,353 four-wheelers, 43,639 buses and 75,603 auto rickshaws in the Capital. In addition, Delhi has 22,503 taxis, 1,41,222 goods vehicles and 13,619 other vehicles, taking the total number of vehicles in the Capital to 51,39,549 * The number of registered motorvehicles in the Capital has crossed the 4 million mark, which is more than the combined number of vehicles in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Of these 90 per cent are personal vehicles * Currently, there are 43 railway stations in Delhi. The total number of passengers catered to at these stations in 2001 was 12.08 lakh per day, including about 9.06 lakh commuters. Of these, the major junctions catering to more than a 1 lakh passengers per day are Delhi junction with 2.72 lakh passengers, New Delhi station with 3.19 lakh passengers, Nizammuddin station with 1.28 lakh passengers and Sadar Bazaar with 1 lakh passengers per day * The total passenger traffic at Delhi Airport grew by 27.4 per cent in 2005-2006, as compared to the previous year. It reached an annual figure of 162 lakh passengers in 2006. According to current forecasts, passenger traffic through Delhi airports is expected to increase to 290 lakh in 2010 and 370 lakh in 2012 * The Metro rail system is expected to carry 108 lakh passengers per day, with an average trip length of 15 km by 2021. Phase II of the network, covering 56.76 km, will be completed by 2010.
