In a city like Delhi, which bears the burden of over 50 lakh vehicles on its roads, using public transport can be a viable option to curb traffic congestion and also a means of reducing expenditure on private vehicles. According to a study conducted by the transport department of Delhi Government, public transport is always beneficial in terms of overall cost of the vehicles and other hassles like parking charges, road rages, cleaning of vehicles and security. Moreover, the study also suggests that travelling in a taxi is more economical than commuting in a private car. According to the study, the cost of travel by private cars works out to Rs 13 to Rs 19 per km. But if one uses even an air-conditioned taxi, this figure come down to Rs 8 to Rs 15 per km. Negating the general notion that private vehicles help in saving money, the report says that it happens as only the direct cost of fuel and repair are visible. However, the pilferage of money excretes in indirect costs including depreciation, which is mainly responsible to cut the pocket of the commuters. According to the report, the car, which initially costs Rs 4 lakh, would cost Rs 3 per km, considering they are run up to one lakh kilometre in 6 years. Similarly, cars costing upto Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh would cost Rs 6 and Rs 9 per km. This, however, excludes other inconveniences including the parking menace. It is noteworthy that the Capital is already facing an acute shortage of parking space. The running cost of the vehicles including the fuel price, maintenance, driver cost, traffic offences, accidents, insurance and amount of installments, goes up to Rs 13 km for a low budget car. Similarly, the cars up to range of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, the running cost would be Rs 16 and Rs 19 per km respectively. Moreover, the cost of depreciation of the cars will be up to Rs 300, Rs 600 and Rs 900 per day of the above categories of the cars irrespective of use or not. The report suggests that costlier car will have the high cost of operation with proportion to its price accordingly. However, the increased use of taxis will not only help decongest the roads but also if share taxi system was promoted, it could prove to be better than carpool. Moreover, share taxi option would also prove to be a better feeder services to the metros apart from providing self-employment opportunities.
