Despite the Supreme Court ban on felling of trees, in Dhubri district in Assam the business in timber continues unabated. The region, abundant in valuable timber, is now left with a few patches of green cover. Timber smugglers have been taking various methods to carry on their illegal trade. Sources said that the smugglers are equipped with sophisticated weapons which makes it difficult for the forest officials to resist their activities.
