The Forest Department has "banished" six privately-owned elephants from Yercaud. These elephants were deployed on coffee estates to lift logs, without obtaining permission from the department. According to the District Forest Officer, Mr. A. O. Limo Toshi, these trained elephants were brought to Yercaud in violation of the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
