Hundreds of trees along National Highway 45 (NH 45) - from Chengalpattu to Tindivanam - are being felled indiscriminately as part of a scheme to convert the two-lane carriage to a four-lane one. At Mamandur, a few kilometres beyond Chengalpattu, uprooted trees are piled up by the roadside.
