Tribal land encroached by people of suspected nationalities

The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) today said eight lakh bighas of land in the 47 tribal blocks and belts in the State have been under encroachment non-tribals, most of whom are people of suspected nationalities. This is despite the fact that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress-BPF Government in Asom has as many as four tribal ministers. Talking to newsmen after the central executive meeting of the Sangha today, AATS president Ranjit Kumar Borgoyari and general secretary Aditya Khaklari said the four tribal ministers in Gogoi Cabinet made it to Dispur with the promise that they would ensure the rights of tribal people, but after formation of the Government they conveniently forgot their promise. "Just ten days after Tarun Gogoi assumed office as the Chief Minister for the second term, we submitted a memorandum comprising as many as 25 demands, but none of the demands is fulfilled as yet,' they said. According to them, eight lakh bighas of land in the 47 tribal belts and blocks in the State have been under occupation of non-tribals, most of whom are people of suspected nationalities. "Despite our repeated representations to the Government, tribal belts and blocks have not been made encroachment free,' they said, and added: "Since the Government cannot protect tribal land of the State, we have formed a five-member subcommittee to protect lands of tribal belts and blocks.'
