Tribals lose land battle

Tribals are losing out to non-tribals in the fight for precious land in agency areas. Out of the 72,001 cases booked under the Andhra Pradesh Schedule Areas Land Transfer Regulation (LTR), a powerful law having stringent provisions for the protection of tribals, 47.47 per cent have gone against tribals. This is happening regularly, despite the presence of stringent provisions for the protection of tribals in the LTR. The major reasons include the lack of interest of LTR authorities in adjudicating land cases and the lack of awareness among tribals of the laws and procedures. There is also no powerful organisation giving legal help to tribals to fight for their lands. A study conducted by the government has discovered that in almost all the cases, tribals do not attend the proceedings. The cases almost become matters to be settled between nontribals and officials, without any notice or information to the tribals.
