The United Democratic Front Government in Kerala should be blam-ed for the aggravation of the tribal rights issue in Kerala and the unfortunate incident of police firing on tribals in the Wayanad area which led to the death of at least two persons. The toll in the firing which took place on Febru-ary 19 is variously put at two to 20. One policeman had been killed by the tribals also in the confrontation. The problem basically concerns the tribals' right to land. It is well-known that in the last few decades tens of thousands of tribals have been dispossessed of their land by settlers from outside and by the Government which took over the land for implementation of projects which largely benefited non-tribals...editorial
