Tripura Renewable Energy Agency (TREA) has adopted an ambitious plan for producing low-cost electricity. As part of the plan, one solar hybrid project has been installed on top of the Vigyan Bhavan recently. The project that was established at a cost of Rs 5 lakh is unique in nature as it uses both wind and sunlight to generate power. The project has been producing two-kilo watt power each day by using wind as well as Sun, said Subhash Chowdhury, Director of TREA here on Tuesday. The project is on experimental basis and if it clicks then this can be implemented to light up inaccessible tribal hamlets, he said. According to the Director, this is the first hybrid power project in the entire North East region even as solar energy is receiving good response in Arunachal Pradesh. He said that wind energy would not be feasible in Tripura as the speed of wind is not that strong. Wind energy is possible only where speed of wind crosses 5 metre/ per second. Unfortunately, speed is well below the standard level here, he said. Chowdhury pointed out that Tripura could have experienced good speed of wind for its close proximity to Cox's bazar sea port in Bangladesh. In fact, high buildings, trees and hills in Bangladesh reduce the speed of wind that blows down to Tripura, he said. Nevertheless, we did not give up our feasibility exploration in the field of wind as well as solar energy, he said. Chowdhury sounded optimistic about the ongoing study. Experts across the globe are seriously exploring other means of low-cost energy to meet the increasing demand of electricity. We don't want to lag behind in this effort, he added.
