Efforts by villagers of Ibrampur to drive away the elephants proved futile on Friday, as the wild tuskers were reportedly in the forests of a nearby hillock. According to available reports, villagers and forest officers tried to drive away the elephants into Maharastra, but the attempt proved futile as the wild tuskers were not able to find their way into Maharashtra and returned to the hillock at Ibrampur. "We tried to drive them away and we almost succeeded in our mission. But to our bad luck, the elephants were not able to find the way as the path was blocked,' said Gopinath Halankar, a forest personnel deputed at the site. It may be recalled the elephants have created havoc in the border areas of Bicholim and Pernem since the last several weeks. These elephants have been reported moving between these two talukas and destroying the property. "They come down from the hillock into the villages at the night and destroy the property. We have kept vigil at night and along with the villagers, are trying to drive them away,' said Mr Halankar.
