Farmers are suffering huge losses as elephants continue to create havoc in Chittoor district. Elephants once again atta-cked a mango grove and paddy fields and destroyed trees and crops near Nagapatla under Rangampeta pa-nchayat limits in the mandal, late on Saturday night. According to sources, farmers raised mangoes and paddy fields on the outskirts of Nagapatla village, adjoining the Shyamala forests. A large number of elephants proceeding through the Kalyani dam gates, ent-ered the paddy fields and destroyed the mango trees and paddy fields. Farmers said that crops worth lakhs of rupees were damaged in the incident. They demanded that the authorities set up solar fences to protect their farms. Farmers said the paddy crop which was ready for harvest had been damaged by the tuskers. They said tuskers had been damaging crops from the night of May 14. Meanwhile, the Tirupati divisional forest officer, Mr Krishnaiah, rushed to the spot on Sunday and assured farmers that measures would be taken to prevent attacks in the future. He said 18 forest staff would be deployed in the village and would help in shooing away the elephants from the Kalyani dam area into the forests. He said proposals had been sent to the government to set up solar fences.
