Chikungunya and other vector-borne diseases are ravaging our district taking toll on the life of thousands of poor people. But the authorities are trying to underplay the seriousness of the actual situation and have so far done only cosmetic measures to contain the diseases, without trying to find out why this has happened and how to root it out completely from the coastal districts. It is time everyone including the authorities realise that, man and nature are inter-dependent, and we all must show our gratitude to nature for taking loving care of us. We have been mindlessly attacking the nature without being concerned to compensate for this loss and abuse the natural resources. This certainly is a wake up call from nature to everyone of us, to show due respect to nature and, take care to preserve the fragile environment. In Puttur, Sullia, Bellare and Belthangady, every household has been affected, earning capabilities are crippled and thousands of families are starving. Unless the authorities and NGOs and the people's representatives respond to this crisis with sincerity and dedication, we will certainly face a human calamity in our twin districts for a long long time.
