Two combined drinking water supply projects will be completed in municipalities in Coimbatore district, Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin announced in the Assembly on Wednesday. A combined drinking water supply scheme for Kuruchi, Kuniamuthur municipalities and Kinathukkadavu town panchayat will be completed at a cost of Rs.49.93 crore in December this year, he said. This will benefit 45,000 people in the region. A combined water supply scheme taken up in the district will benefit Goundanpalayam municipality and Vadavalli town panchyat. This is being done at a cost of Rs.30.38 crore and will benefit 73,000 people. The project will be completed in March 2009, he added. Another two combined drinking water supply projects will be taken up for conducting feasibility studies, he said. This includes a Rs.44-crore scheme the Veerakeralam, Perur, Pulluvapatti town panchayats. Another scheme that will be taken for the conduct of feasibility study will provide water for Madathukkulam, Sankramanallur, Kaniyur and Kumaralingam town panchayats. The scheme will benefit about 54,000 people in 125 habitations and will cost Rs.20.6 crore. In another announcement, he said that sewerage lines would be formed in extended areas of Tirupur city at a cost of Rs.40 crore. The government will definitely act if legislators provide evidence on instances of any wrongdoing on the Coimbatore underground drainage project, Mr. Stalin told the House. Intervening in the debate on the demands for grants to his departments, Mr. Stalin said three companies, headquartered in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai, had submitted bids, which were under examination. He was responding to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator T. Malarvan's charge in this regard. C. Govindasamy (Communist Party of India-Marxist) said the Minister should order fresh bids in the light of observations in the audit report on the project.
