Two lakh toilets to be built under sanitation campaign in Salem

People can approach village panchayat or block development office
It has been targeted to construct two lakh individual household toilets in the district under the Total Sanitation Campaign shortly and the works on this project had already commenced.
A subsidy of Rs. 12,000 is being provided under the rural sanitation campaign for the construction of each of the individual household toilet and the workers of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme are involved in this project, K. Maharabushanam, District Collector, said while addressing the grama sabha meeting at Kattuveppillaipatti village panchayat on Sunday. People residing in the households without toilet facility could approach the village panchayat or the block development office and they will be sanctioned the same, the Collector said and called upon the people to take advantage of this programme.
Referring to the steps taken for the eradication of open defecation in the rural areas, Mr. Maharabushanam said that sanitation complexes have come up in all the village panchayats in the district.
Subramani, president of the Kattuveppillaipatti panchayat, presided over the meeting.
Grama sabha meetings were held in all the 385 village panchayats in the district. The issues of drinking water supply, construction of rain water harvesting structures, putting an to using of plastic articles, proper maintenance of solar street lamps, checking the spread of dengue, creating awareness on the ill effects of using tobacco etc were discussed at these meetings. At the grama sabha meeting held at Vembadithalam panchayat, a group of senior residents raised the issue of non-receipt of old-age pension for the past few months. They alleged that the list of eligible old-age pensioners prepared by the authorities was not a proper one, as many names have been left out. They wanted preparation of a fresh list after collection of all details.
Workers of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to be involved in the project
