Can a family make do with two litres of potable water a day? The residents of a number of areas in Guwahati get only two litres of potable water, supplied by the administration, a day.
Barring Anil Nagar and Pub–Sarania, flood waters have receded in most of the areas in the city that were badly affected by the latest deluge that has left a trail of devastation and misery. Most of the households, roads and lanes in these areas are filled with garbage and mud. The scarcity of drinking water is the commonest scene in all these areas. The administration has been supplying potable water in these areas, but they cannot provide more than two litres to each family. The city denizens have no way out but to make do with two litres potable water.
The problem of potable water in the city is much more than what meets the eye. Even the residents of the areas that were not inundated by the latest artificial flood in the city have to face the scarcity of water, for heavy landslides in areas like Nabagraha, Nijorapar and Bamunimaidam have damaged the pipes of the water supply network. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has not been able to supply potable water in some of these areas due to landslides.
Landslides are still occurring in some areas like Nabagraha, Nijorapar and Bamunimaidam causing much damage to households.
