NEW DELHI: Parking in posh localities of M-Block Greater Kailash-I and Defence Colony will cease to be a nightmare for Delhiites as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has embarked on an ambitious scheme to construct two automated multi-level parking and commercial complexes at these two locations within two years. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta on Monday said the parking lots would be constructed at a cost of Rs.305 crore and provide space for a total of 2,100 cars and 300 scooters. They would be constructed on a design-build-finance-operate-and-transfer basis under the public-private partnership with a total concession fee of Rs.60 crore. The parking lots would be developed by Era Infra Engineering Limited on B-O-T basis and the MCD would sign an agreement with the firm for a concession period of 35 years. The complexes would be fully air-conditioned with 100 per cent power back-up and fitted with lift and escalators with 13 level deep underground basements for automated parking. Presently parking at M Block Market in Greater Kailash-I was being operated by MCD's Remunerative Project Cell, said Mr. Gupta. The proposed automated multi-level car parking here would have a commercial area of 4,466 square metres on the ground and first floor and a parking area of 32,136 sq.m in the basement. It would have a capacity for parking 1,200 cars and 200 scooters on two plots. In Defence Colony, which is a frequently visited market of South Delhi, one portion of the land in the roundabout near Defence Colony market has been identified for the project. At present this land is with the Horticulture Department and is being used as a nursery. However, the Department has given a no-objection certificate for development of multilevel car parking at this site. The proposed parking here would boast a commercial area of 3,314 sq. m. on the ground and first floor and parking area of 28,730 sq. m. in the basement. It would have a capacity for parking 900 cars and 100 scooters. Mr. Gupta said parking was becoming a major civic problem in Delhi and its redress was the need of the hour. At present road surface parking including kerbside parking and a few underground parking lots are available in Delhi.
