Surat: Following a TOI expose on how quacks flourished fearlessly in the city, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Sunday shot off notices to 952 organisations demanding details of their infrastructure and biomedical waste disposal mechanisms. During checking, they found 54 quacks. Out them, RK Patel and AK Vishwash were arrested. In diamond city, even school kids work as compounders in the clinics run by quacks. Jyoti Sonavane, 12, a resident of Anjana, works at a clinic after school hours to earn some pocket money. She packs medicines for visiting patients as per the prescriptions of a quack in the clinic near her home and also puts the ill on the drip if asked to. Meanwhile, Bharuch district administration on Sunday trained guns on scrap vendors and seized large quantity of biomedical waste. The drive, led by MS Shukla, regional officer of Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) checked several scrap vendors at Ankleshwar and nearby industrial areas and confiscated biomedical waste. However, authorities denied saying anything about the identity of scrap vendor but while talking to TOI they confirmed the seizure.
