In exciting news for wildlife conservationists, a camera installed at Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district has caught two snow leopards, a rare species. Sources in the Uttarakhand forest department said the camera captured a male snow leopard on November 18 and a female in the first week of December. They said a survey conducted about three years ago had revealed presence of snow leopards in the district. "This is the first time two snow leopards — a male and a female — have been caught on camera. The spotting of the species is set to elevate the status of the park on the national map," principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) S S Sharma said. He said he had sent a detailed report to the Ministry of Forest and Environment seeking to conserve the leopards.
