The Indian setting: Kerala's chief minister is keen to give forest land to tribals and eviction drives in most parts of the country have slowed to a virtual halt. The international setting: The UN will be sitting down on Monday to discuss threats to forests and put a value to this green gold to propel conservation and management measures. Director-general (forests) M K Sharma, leading the team to the 12-day UN Forum on Forests meeting in Geneva, said that they would showcase attempts at community participation through the joint forest management mechanism, which covered 72,000 villages and 17 million hectares of land.
