Uncontrolled mining takes the richness out of Goan soil

For decades, its adverse impact has been played down and the ravages of mining have been tucked away into a remote part of interior Goa. But the latest technological tools are now being used to bring home the heavy toll iron-ore extraction takes on this state. The Tata Energy Research Institute has just warned that surface soils in and around Goa's mining areas "have become highly disturbed and unfertile, with very little vegetation."
